Directing
Starting as an assistant editor I’ve experienced all of the different components of production I approach directing from the perspective of someone that has done the job. When I talk to the crew I know what I’m asking them to do and exactly why I’m asking them to do it. Having worked at an agency for ten years, I also know how to talk to clients and ensure that everyone feels comfortable with what we’re trying to accomplish.
Creative Direction
Working at Genuine I was often responsible for the overall creative of video projects, this often began with the concepting/brainstorming phase, and continued throughout the post production phase often implementing a mix of video best practices with strategic insights.
Producing
I approach the role of producing as the nerve center for any project. When I’m producing something, I want to collect the most talented people I know, and I want to let them do what they do best.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
My cinematography is driven by the story, before framing every shot, I ask myself why it’s important to the overall narrative. This helps to inform decisions around angles, lensing, lighting, frame rate, and movement. Also, having been an editor, I mentally edit each shot as I’m taking it, making sure that we’ll have flexibility in post, without overshooting.
photography
When I take a picture, I want to show something familiar from a new perspective or something new. I’ve taken thousands of corporate headshots, and every time, I’m searching for that moment when the subject has forgotten that they have to take this picture, they’ve forgotten their poses, they’ve forgotten everyone else in the room, they just feel good, and they let that leak out just long enough for me to capture it. The don’t always choose that picture, but it’s always my favorite part of the process. I also have never seen a sunset that I didn’t want to photograph.
EDITING
Spending years editing at an agency gave me experience across dozens of industries and clients and what I found was that they all essentially want the same thing. They want their story to connect to their audience. People will watch content if it speaks to them, editing is the art finding the right combination of footage to connect to your audience.
Motion Graphics
When communicating a message quickly Animation is often one of the most effective tools. It can draw the eye to a key takeaway, do something practically impossible, and connect a brand look and feel to a seemingly unrelated image. I have extensive experience with title design in After Effects as well as experience directing and producing for Cinema4D.
